A former community affairs liaison with the City Council of New York City, Milan Taylor currently serves as an appointed board member for Community Board 14. Milan Taylor is also the founder and CEO of the Rockaway Youth Task Force (RYTF), which has provided services for hundreds of young people in the Rockaway peninsula of Queens since its establishment in 2011.
Among its initiatives, the RYTF has helped strengthen local schools by successfully advocating for participatory budgeting. Additionally, in response to the closing of many supermarkets following Superstorm Sandy, the organization built a community garden on an empty half-acre lot secured with the help of the NYC Parks Department.
Operated by local youth, the community garden offers growing space to community members, who in turn have helped provide access to more than 40,000 pounds of affordable produce to Rockaway residents since 2013. Supported by solar technology and sustainable practices, such as rainwater harvesting, the garden hosts seasonal farm stands in addition to monthly events aimed at connecting community members.
